<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Just "fixed" (redirected) the links that <a href="https://koshdukaimusicreason.blogspot.com/search/label/RER%20Articles" target="_blank">some old posts had<br />to the long lost "Rack Extension Review" site</a>,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
all thanks to the <a href="https://web.archive.org/" target="_blank">Web.Archive.org</a> (as usual) :)<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
So now, <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150101233807/http://rackextensionreview.com/author/koshdukai/" target="_blank">those (still valid!) tutorial articles<br />about CV and the Combinator</a></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
are back through the good'ol <a href="https://web.archive.org/" target="_blank">WayBackMachine</a>! :)</div>

<b>Reason</b> is now also a <b>VST3</b> instrument and effects plugin.
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7vNEalEbcaBsSrvOSPAkWf0i5PpMHH4VecpxAWM-bW6U0me4kjxMcpcJ0pet0TVmBHGMZnT6xX_0d9PwihzEgtOg0N1Q9pcJWS-ert6btte1w85N5wEIVZV5cOBwzTb9IEudmaM-MI3M/s1600/Reason+11+VST3+Plugin.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1087" height="396" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7vNEalEbcaBsSrvOSPAkWf0i5PpMHH4VecpxAWM-bW6U0me4kjxMcpcJ0pet0TVmBHGMZnT6xX_0d9PwihzEgtOg0N1Q9pcJWS-ert6btte1w85N5wEIVZV5cOBwzTb9IEudmaM-MI3M/s400/Reason+11+VST3+Plugin.PNG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
If you've been waiting to get your hands on Reason's devices, Rack Extensions within its rack paradigm with the natural rack device stacking and wiring magic in the comfort of your (s)elected D.A.W., then <b>Reason 11</b> is the version you've been waiting for and it's for you.<br />
<br />
Keep in mind that <b>Reason 11.0 Plugin <u>doesn't have</u></b>:<br />
<ul>
<li><b>MIDI output</b>: so you won't be able to use the Players MIDI note output in your D.A.W.'s device MIDI chain.</li>
<li><b>MIDI Channel awareness on input</b>: So all devices in that rack instance will get the same notes, MIDI OMNI style. The only workarounds are use another instance and/or use a Combinator "Receive Notes" filter and/or make use of note ranges again through the Combinator "Key Range" pair of settings.</li>
</ul>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
If you haven't been waiting for this, then what's new in <b>Reason 11</b> for you?</div>
</div>
<br />
<b>5 new Effect rack devices</b>...<br />
<ul>
<li>well, 2 actually new:</li>
<ul>
<li><b>Quartet Chorus Ensemble</b></li>
<li><b>Sweeper Modulation Effect</b></li>
</ul>
<li>and 3 classic ones but in a rack device format, besides the known main Mixer section format.</li>
<ul>
<li><b>Master Bus Compressor</b></li>
<li><b>Channel Dynamics</b></li>
<li><b>Channel EQ</b></li>
</ul>
</ul>
<div>
...and <b>6 new</b> (always welcome) <b>workflow features</b>:</div>
<div>
<div>
<ul>
<li><b>Curved automation</b>: Nice-to-have for many, though a bit clunky to use for some</li>
<li><b>Audio clip crossfades</b>: Very welcome but a bit awkward UX</li>
<li><b>Improved and individual vertical zoom</b>: Welcome but a bit awkward UX</li>
<li><b>Mute MIDI notes</b>: Yes!!!</li>
<li><b>Draw multiple notes</b>: Neat :)</li>
<li><b>Show played and selected notes in key edit</b>: Very convenient when playing then on a controller while drawing in the sequencer with a mouse.</li>
</ul>
</div>
</div>
<div>
...oh and some bug fixes, which, if you're the unlucky few that are experiencing some of those bugs, all you have to do is upgrade to Reason 11 to get them fixed, yay!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>What do you lose in Reason 11 ?</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div>
<b>ReWire</b>. But Reason 11 will start faster, thanks to this. So, if you use it, keep the previous Reason version installed, if you upgrade. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>...and that's it, that's Reason 11.0 :)</b></div>
<br />
Let's see if Reason 11.x will finally handle the unfinished features introduced in previous versions.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>PS</b>: Special reference to the also new <b>Scenic Hybrid Instrument</b> and how to Remote Override it!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPBzftTGt25XrNhPcGhkX74NmkZ8cAq42vfEBQi9frRa2Cxs5wkNEsfOatr0Ovx6fIJr6BLz7WBnKEKa771ZoxY6g2_yPq4Pcv0ref4FPsbsfNQupfcFnAU-v9DG6t1zPJrkitb2L9ESU/s1600/Scenic+Remote+Override.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="532" data-original-width="792" height="267" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPBzftTGt25XrNhPcGhkX74NmkZ8cAq42vfEBQi9frRa2Cxs5wkNEsfOatr0Ovx6fIJr6BLz7WBnKEKa771ZoxY6g2_yPq4Pcv0ref4FPsbsfNQupfcFnAU-v9DG6t1zPJrkitb2L9ESU/s400/Scenic+Remote+Override.PNG" width="400" /></a></div>
Remember to switch to the EDIT pages and go to the section that has the parameter you want to map override, else you won't see much :)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEcypk-v110tTquO4JWKn9MQFvBrEsKtyNTLKi8cOyUMR3h8WUcrBOONhw3YvQ0QJ2O7BYQjSlflEXgwHc3_cMMXI7It-jQ8hbzj2Iwc0DOyCvBQMYK_ciYAR0ezIezo7GpZNLhc5P8kk/s1600/FavoriteDevices.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="402" data-original-width="382" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEcypk-v110tTquO4JWKn9MQFvBrEsKtyNTLKi8cOyUMR3h8WUcrBOONhw3YvQ0QJ2O7BYQjSlflEXgwHc3_cMMXI7It-jQ8hbzj2Iwc0DOyCvBQMYK_ciYAR0ezIezo7GpZNLhc5P8kk/s400/FavoriteDevices.PNG" width="380" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
One tiny small but in practice huge <b><u>NEW</u></b> feature:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Favorite lists finally supporting Devices!</b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
...besides just patches and folders.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">This is <u>huge</u>!</span></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I've been waiting for this for some years now, since Rack Extensions "exploded" in numbers and diversity and even more after VST support.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Given the fact that Reason doesn't support a TAG system for multi-type tagging devices, patches, ReFills, etc and its browser searching and filtering aren't anything to write about enthusiastically, those with a good amount of REs and VSTs will have a hard time reaching out for the right device at the right time unless some time was spent preparing a custom rack and sometimes even "forget" about some devices that could be used simply because those are "buried" among so many others.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Usually I want to pick a device by function, not by brand or manufacturer.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When I want a Piano, I want to pick the right one out of the ones I own.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Same when reaching for an Organ, an emulation of an analog synth or an Additive, FM, PM, a Sequencer or a Reverb, a Delay, a Compressor, Phaser, Flanger, etc...</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
Well, looks like now, thanks to Reason 10.0, we'll be able to do so.</div>
<br />
We'll be finally able to do Favorite lists of Devices by device type or function or whatever you think is the most appropriate way to group your rack devices.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, apparently, thanks to this first video stream from Propellerhead about Reason 10, we now know that, besides the announced new content and 2+3 (really) new instrument devices, there's also ONE new feature in the application.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Just this alone, together with Europa and Grain, makes the upgrade worthwhile now, IMHO :)<br />
...add to that, whatever Propellerhead may still throw at us in future Reason 10.x sub-updates!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And speaking of Europa, here's the stream video about it:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukWiKrTlMzQ" target="_blank">Reason 10.0 was announced this past Friday, Sept 22nd</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.propellerheads.se/en/reason/new" target="_blank">Final release happening on October 25 2017.</a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">What's <b>NEW</b>?</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<ul>
<li><u>2x <b>NEW</b> Rack Extension instruments</u>:</li>
<ul>
<li><b>Europa</b>: a shapeshifting synthesizer, so more than just a plain wavetable synth</li>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://a.phcdn.se/static-live/img/reason/europa.de3c7a04b980.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="620" data-original-width="754" height="328" src="https://a.phcdn.se/static-live/img/reason/europa.de3c7a04b980.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<li><b>Grain</b>: a sample manipulator with various play algorithms, so not just grain based ones</li>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://a.phcdn.se/static-live/img/reason/grain.4b4afc43a394.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="620" data-original-width="754" height="328" src="https://a.phcdn.se/static-live/img/reason/grain.4b4afc43a394.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
</ul>
<li><u>3x <b>NEW</b> IDT based ROMpler instruments</u> with sounds provided by <a href="https://soundiron.com/" target="_blank">SoundIron</a>:</li>
<ul>
<li><b>Klang</b>: with a selection of tuned percussion based acoustic instruments</li>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://a.phcdn.se/static-live/img/reason/klang.baca462aa852.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="208" data-original-width="754" height="110" src="https://a.phcdn.se/static-live/img/reason/klang.baca462aa852.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<li><b>Pangea</b>: with a selection of odd/unusual/ethnic/world instruments</li>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://a.phcdn.se/static-live/img/reason/pangea.705237dc57f3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="208" data-original-width="754" height="110" src="https://a.phcdn.se/static-live/img/reason/pangea.705237dc57f3.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<li><b>Humana</b>: a Vocal Ensemble/Choir oriented instrument</li>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://a.phcdn.se/static-live/img/reason/humana.b3d15da8f7a2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="208" data-original-width="754" height="110" src="https://a.phcdn.se/static-live/img/reason/humana.b3d15da8f7a2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
</ul>
<li><u>2x already existing and well known Rack Extensions</u>:</li>
<ul>
<li><a href="https://shop.propellerheads.se/product/radical-piano/" style="font-weight: bold;" target="_blank">Radical Piano</a> instrument</li>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" data-original-height="345" data-original-width="756" height="182" src="https://a.phcdn.se/static-live/img/reason/radical-piano-closeup.764591c1433a.jpg" width="400" /></div>
<li><a href="https://shop.propellerheads.se/product/synchronous/" target="_blank"><b>Synchronous</b> Timed Effects Modulator</a> effect</li>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" data-original-height="415" data-original-width="754" height="220" src="https://a.phcdn.se/static-live/img/reason/synchronous.dac3b7275d7b.jpg" width="400" /></div>
</ul>
<li>...and "<i>multi-gigabyte infusion of cutting-edge drum loops and samples</i>" by <a href="https://www.samplemagic.com/" style="text-align: justify;" target="_blank">Sample Magic</a></li>
<ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</ul>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, ok... cool, new stuff is always cool, right? ...though, some isn't "new NEW", since many already interested in...<br />
...pianos may already own Radical Piano<br />
...time based audio mangling may already own Synchronous<br />
...ethnic & world instruments may already own the IDT/ReFill collections and bundles available on the PH Shop and elsewhere or even as Kontakt instruments now that VST support is finally here<br />
...vocal oriented libraries may already own SoundIron's own <a href="https://shop.propellerheads.se/product/olympus-micro/" target="_blank">Olympus Micro ReFill</a> or any of their or other existing Kontakt based offerings<br />
<br />
Same with the Drum & Loop stuff. Anyone interested into that kind of content would've already accumulated a reasonable amount of 3rd party libraries already, right?<br />
<br />
<br />
So, Reason 10.0 seems a bit disconcerting for many, as a major update for the existing Reason 9.5 faithful users that kept updating 'till the latest offering.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
...unless...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Reason 10.0 isn't really an update for existing Reason users ?</b></span></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Maybe it's meant for first time customers wanting to finally try Reason ?!</b></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Maybe it's for those that kept 1, 2, 3 or more versions behind and probably will think all this new stuff is worth finally upgrading ?! Not sure about this one though.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Sure, <b>Europa</b> & <b>Grain</b> alone might be a good excuse for R9.5 owners to jump on board the R10.0 train, since the upgrade price would basically be the price of those 2 new interesting Rack Extensions (apparently) not available as standalone offerings in the PH Shop, so upgrading to R10.0 is the only option to get them.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It's a bit confusing, at least to me, to say the least... :/<br />
<br />
Anyway, here's a few reactions of some YouTubers:<br />

<span face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">It's Christmas time and all the gift buying'n'giving (and some other random conversations with like-minded people) reminded me of a bunch of hardware I almost got as a kid but... due to unfortunate (financial) circumstances, it was never meant to happen :P</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Let me begin then, not with the "I wished I could access them" but the main "I almost got them" as a kid:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">1) <a href="http://www.vintagesynth.com/casio/cz101.php" target="_blank">Casio Keyboard CZ-101</a> (1984)</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Because that was the most affordable (4 voice) polyphonic MIDI enabled synth (I thought) I could get my hands on!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Also, besides polyphonic, it was multitimbral! =D ...which, in my mind, would kinda solve the issue of only having 1 synth ;)</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">...and... that never happened :]</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<span face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">I clearly remember passing by a local shop and seeing a mixer-like panel and instantly stopping to investigate it further. It was a 6 Channel mixer with a built in simple BBD echo and a 4 track tape recorder plus a stereo/2 track tape player.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><br /></span></div>

Hey :)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When connecting an hardware instrument to Reason, where it can work both as a MIDI Controller (sending notes, controls, etc to Reason) and also as a MIDI Instrument (receiving notes, CCs, etc from Reason) it's always good practice to turn off its <b>Local Control.</b><br />
(unless you prefer to set the outgoing vs incoming to different MIDI Channels).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Local Control? </b><b><i>What is that ?!</i></b><br />
Well, usually, MIDI enabled instruments are able to disconnect their physical user-interface (keyboard/pads, knob/fader/buttons controls) from their sound "engine" or section(s).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><i>Why is </i></b><b>Local Control<i> needed</i></b><b><i>?</i></b><br />
To <b>avoid MIDI feedback</b> loops or double triggering of notes, etc.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Imagine the following scenario in Reason (or any other DAW):</b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
You have the <b>External MIDI Instrument (EMI) rack device</b> point to Arturia DrumBrute's (in) MIDI port, so you can send MIDI notes from Reason and trigger DrumBrute's pads (sounds).<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjp0C0HYgKjw9iKmRS8hXDN91GNrBYdlUCSqaIutzmEsRW9voB0fRJMBDaJzQpK_JxfTdTRwXJUFnWoXhK_p_ukXIS8cW8XfGH-F6JkoLs7cWLuS22L-i7US36BlfbcAvtU4fMVHG8VoGE/s1600/EMItoArturiaDrumBrute.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Reason's EMI sending MIDI out to Arturia DrumBrute's MIDI in" border="0" height="53" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjp0C0HYgKjw9iKmRS8hXDN91GNrBYdlUCSqaIutzmEsRW9voB0fRJMBDaJzQpK_JxfTdTRwXJUFnWoXhK_p_ukXIS8cW8XfGH-F6JkoLs7cWLuS22L-i7US36BlfbcAvtU4fMVHG8VoGE/s640/EMItoArturiaDrumBrute.PNG" title="Reason's EMI sending MIDI out to Arturia DrumBrute's MIDI in" width="583" /></a></div>
<br />
But you also want to receive notes from the DrumBrute's pads/sequencer so you can easily record your pad playing into Reason's own Sequencer tracks.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhx0CjSwv1fkimuDEFKlEMEP0wbYaqGYe6ojkZiW8s7TFNceUvfrn8wQfILCvYdXKeUopPI6iuF21M1jGwZHCuH1wuRydOHZITWE3N108dVaUIIA4vIrWjEfyuLsr6jtI95iJ_cNCzbtyA/s1600/RecordingDrumBrute.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="315" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhx0CjSwv1fkimuDEFKlEMEP0wbYaqGYe6ojkZiW8s7TFNceUvfrn8wQfILCvYdXKeUopPI6iuF21M1jGwZHCuH1wuRydOHZITWE3N108dVaUIIA4vIrWjEfyuLsr6jtI95iJ_cNCzbtyA/s400/RecordingDrumBrute.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
To do that, you simply add a (generic) MIDI Controller Surface and point it to DrumBrute's (out) MIDI port.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><i>Done, right?</i></b><br />
<b>Well, not really</b>, because as soon as you try to record your pad playing into the EMI device that's also sending MIDI to the DrumBrute, you'll hear all your pads being played at least twice. On a worse case scenario (not DrumBrute's case), if the MIDI instrument does MIDI THRU from its MIDI IN to its MIDI OUT, then you'll get an endless loop of notes playing, going back'n'forth from the DAW to the instrument and back to the DAW and to the instrument again, <i>ad aeternum</i> ;)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is why is usually a good idea to set Local Control to OFF on external MIDI instruments connected in these configurations. The alternative to this, like I briefly mentioned in the beginning, would be to work on different MIDI channels but in this particular case, I find the use of Local Control, when available, to be a more practical solution.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is why I did for the DrumBrute something similar to what I had already for the MiniBrute:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>A specific Remote Codec that will turn its Local Control OFF while being used with Reason</b>, allowing independent use of both its "controller" aspect and its sound generation aspect, without any local connection between the two, all controlled through Reason.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, here it is:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1drv.ms/u/s!AuNaFDB4IRDLhJkqhot5TWIor6ibDg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHYVBEJXx08dyM0EyZQe-CN0IhtviJLxWcmpYAClidRLUgaj8br9SA78q0fPViQXE28eXTJ87O10vf8fX0fvTknsRcVQWP__PBSJKpMyPuJGmTkGQoNs3P-BrxjjJYlkodLhVGwbIZ6Dc/s1600/Koshdukai_DrumBrute.png" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1drv.ms/u/s!AuNaFDB4IRDLhJkqhot5TWIor6ibDg" target="_blank">Arturia DrumBrute Remote Codec by Koshdukai V.1.0.0 (201610)</a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This Codec has 2 flavours built-in, showing up as "models":</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>"DrumBrute /<"</b>: it's a regular transparent one, just in case you prefer to use a dedicated Codec but don't want Local Control to be turned OFF. If you want this one, don't use auto-detection. You'll have to add it manually, by choosing "Add", "Arturia" and the "DrumBrute /<" model in the Edit, Preferences, Control Surfaces configuration of Reason.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>"DrumBrute /< (Local OFF)"</b>: this is <u>the one that will be auto-detected and added by default</u> and it's the one that will turn DrumBrute's Local Control OFF when starting Reason. Local Control will be restored to ON when you quit Reason.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If for some reason you disconnected DrumBrute before quitting Reason (so Local Control ON couldn't be sent) simply connect the DrumBrute again to your computer, start Reason and quit Reason. That will allow Reason to send the "Local Control ON" again to DrumBrute and make the pads work again (locally, when not connected to Reason).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I hope that you find this little simple Codec useful when enjoying your DrumBrute with Reason :)</div>

If you have a controller capable of sending MIDI messages on multiple MIDI Channels, like an <b style="text-align: justify;">M-Audio Axiom</b><span style="text-align: justify;">'s 4 Keyboard zones (so 4 MIDI Channels from the same keyboard) plus the Pads on Channel 10 or an </span><b style="text-align: justify;">Arturia BeatStep PRO</b><span style="text-align: justify;"> that can send 2 sequences on their own MIDI Channel (1 and 2) and its Drum sequencer on MIDI Channel 10 plus the controller on, say, MIDI Channel 16, etc, </span><span style="text-align: justify;">then you certainly felt the need for a MIDI Channel-aware type of Remote Codec like this one.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Taking the BSP example, here's how to get its 4 sources of MIDI into Reason with this Remote Codec+Map.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiW5KRP2cvlJc9CdBIx9DZguhR5Qm3rdkWxnbcwKOXdp64LI4sqFL0VHDdCcuj9y3AxLLjyB0IwYYRes1Ex-PAq9jWu5RYLgRS2cweirTJmVpSzSD53vm770pkamaagkT36xtJCMCu6-FI/s1600/GenericMIDIChannelRemote1.png" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="312" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiW5KRP2cvlJc9CdBIx9DZguhR5Qm3rdkWxnbcwKOXdp64LI4sqFL0VHDdCcuj9y3AxLLjyB0IwYYRes1Ex-PAq9jWu5RYLgRS2cweirTJmVpSzSD53vm770pkamaagkT36xtJCMCu6-FI/s320/GenericMIDIChannelRemote1.png" width="320" /></a><b>Add a Control Surface per MIDI source</b> with these 3 easy steps:<b></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>1) </b>Add a Control Surface from the "<i><Other></i>" Manufacturer and choose the correct "<i>Generic Controller on MIDI Channel __ /<</i>" Model with the MIDI Channel you'll need</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2DXoEJabS05hediGnMB4UClqaAoEzX_2C33AtA3TeJCJ53twk1XwRoYyRH7x9IpTAvQEkJyUABK33MT-X4bjxs2K8_pnKs5S0G73LZ-HIiQ_KiLEsWkdyDCIXdccOd-Xo_8FN0DlP2ik/s1600/GenericMIDIChannelRemote2.png" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="312" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2DXoEJabS05hediGnMB4UClqaAoEzX_2C33AtA3TeJCJ53twk1XwRoYyRH7x9IpTAvQEkJyUABK33MT-X4bjxs2K8_pnKs5S0G73LZ-HIiQ_KiLEsWkdyDCIXdccOd-Xo_8FN0DlP2ik/s320/GenericMIDIChannelRemote2.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<b style="font-weight: bold;">2)</b> Give it a proper name, so you know what's the real controller being used with this generic map (that you can totally customize on your own)</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>3)</b> Select the proper MIDI In Port for it</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
You can ignore the Out Port on these generic maps unless you plan to customize the Codec too.</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Repeat the above steps for each of the BSP sequencers (since that's the example I'm using here).</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, you'll add 4 Control Surfaces for BSP's Controller Mode, Sequencer 1, Sequencer 2 and Drums, each with its respective MIDI Channel set to what you're planning to use in the BSP and all of them pointing at the same MIDI In Port, since that's the one the BSP will be sending its MIDI data.</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Don't worry with Reason's yellow warning. That's expected since you're declaring multiple Control Surfaces with a common MIDI Port. It warns you but won't block you from using them like it used to on much older Reason versions.</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, you'll end up with 4 new entries like these:</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOU52fvA1_xT5KL3tFuClnVbeEBLpX4S1L-YRzIe5zqj9nDZ3AVQJ-smStmnWEDRFBkIjQLLid1x1ziFlM9POpQKutmF2wsUj8pZeEGnQus3vGQGjlYqZFWN7SqldGpQDvMQvbAYSniV4/s400/GenericMIDIChannelRemote3.png" width="291" /></div>
<span style="text-align: justify;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
...and that's about it. After this, you can lock any of those controllers to specific rack devices and each will only receive the MIDI notes (or CCs in the BSP Controller mode's case) that are being sent on those specific MIDI Channels.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The big difference from using this solution instead of doing the MIDI Channel redirection into rack devices through the Advanced MIDI Device is that with this Codec you're able to record the MIDI data into the Sequencer, something that's not possible nor the main purpose of the Advanced MIDI Device.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, here's the Zip with the files inside, including the ReadMe.txt with the usual installation instructions:</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

<span style="font-size: x-small;"><br />
<b><u>Update</u>: This new 1.1.1 version allows MIDI feedback for those wanting to send back to the controller the changes being done through the Reason GUI.</b><br />
Use only if your controller is prepared to receive the same CCs it's sending on each control!<br />You can easily turn this feature off by selecting 'Not selected' in the Out port :)</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #0000ee;"><u><br /></u></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #0000ee;"><div style="color: black; text-align: center;"><a href="https://koshdukai.gumroad.com/l/gmcarcm" target="_blank">Koshdukai's Generic Controller MIDI Channel Remote Codec V.1.2.0 (202006)</a> <span style="font-size: x-small;"><br /><b><u>Update</u>: This new 1.2.0 version includes a Remote Map Scope for EMI/MIDI OUT Device, pre-mapping each of the MIDI CC to the respective rack device's "CC out" parameters.</b></span></div><div style="color: black; text-align: justify;"><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div></div></span></div></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;"><strike>
...oh, and speaking of the Arturia BeatStep PRO, I'm still planning to do a specific Codec+Map for it someday, but I'm waiting for it to stabilize its feature-set so I can see how to take proper advantage of its closer integration with Reason through a specific Map.</strike></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<strike><br /></strike></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;"><strike>

<span style="text-align: justify;">Actually, this has been sitting on my Remote projects folder for 2 years now (and far from being alone in there, eh), waiting for me to complete the rest of the Remote Map, because my initial need for it was really just to control Kong, Dr.OctoRex and ReDrum, that's why those are really the ones that got some partial love on the included map.</span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Early this year, <b>due to the improvements added to the ReDrum remoteables s<u>ince Reason 8.2</u></b>, I ended up making some editing to support the <u>new ReDrum remoteables</u> :)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I'm hoping that anyone wanting to extend it or complete it has enough examples already in the partial map I'm providing to customize it for their own purposes.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There are a few simple tricks both on the Codec and Map side that may help some users wanting to get into feedback-aware MIDI controllers to get up to speed without going too deep in Lua programming.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Probably I'll be sharing a few more simple but useful Codecs+Maps namely a generic one that allows MIDI Channel selection for those that have a multi-channel MIDI source of notes and need to route (lock and/or record) them independently in Reason, like... the new <a href="http://www.arturia.com/beatstep-pro/overview">Arturia BeatStep Pro</a> (which I'll end up doing a specific Codec for it, obviously, when/if I find the time to do it properly)... but until then, that generic one is working fine.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Along these "utility" simple Remote Codec+Maps, I also have one for the <a href="http://www.arturia.com/products/hardware-synths/minibrute/overview">Arturia MiniBrute</a> with an optional "Local Off" mode, easily decoupling its keyboard from the synth section, allowing it to work as a generic MIDI keyboard while Reason uses it as a keyboardless synth module through EMI.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If anyone's interested on that one, <a href="http://koshdukaimusicreason.blogspot.pt/2015/07/arturia-sparkle-remote-codecmap.html#comment-form">drop me a comment</a> and I'll share that too :)</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><i>2022/06/20</i>: After years of providing this Codec+Map for free, I've decided to try providing it through an "e-shop" platform to see if there's any incentive to improve/upgrade/update it any further. like adding some Remote Maps for the Rytmik Drum Machine, Reason Drum Kit or the UMPF Club Drums and Retro Beats :)</div>

<br />
Before the <a href="https://www.propellerheads.se/reason/instruments/kong">Kong Drum Designer</a> rack device, which is typically the easiest and preferred device to convert a MIDI Note (i.e. Pad hit) into a CV Gate output (each pad has a CV out gate at the back) the BV512 Vocoder was the only rack device offering a similar behavior.<br />

<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The <a href="http://cdn.propellerheads.se/Reason8/Manuals/Reason_8_MIDI_Implementation_Chart.pdf" target="_blank">BV512 MIDI Implementation</a> made it respond to a range of MIDI keyboard note input to control each of its 32 Vocoder Bands. This allows various cools tricks related with directly controlling specific and multiple bands while in Vocoder mode.</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTv2X0LIAoCJr-EhKIGFHUsEqb8wBi7LPWIoAnFPJq4FsSPiY02RcX8lZOy1oJd2SAuqgeJs5DY6d-5QyM_APvxX6wlJQVH9IFTGcKLy_9cDjRKhnLZPrz1lkSswNI9rODYKlmFYsvVYA/s1600/R653BV512.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="201" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTv2X0LIAoCJr-EhKIGFHUsEqb8wBi7LPWIoAnFPJq4FsSPiY02RcX8lZOy1oJd2SAuqgeJs5DY6d-5QyM_APvxX6wlJQVH9IFTGcKLy_9cDjRKhnLZPrz1lkSswNI9rODYKlmFYsvVYA/s1600/R653BV512.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The 1st 16 of those Vocoder bands, when activated (either by audio modulation or MIDI note input) will have their respective value output as CV at the back of the device.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgr5KJRv0I2ZVGau_45SUtAcfgeuUoHA9wSN8AiADYFwphSWxJ-LiW08R7egwXav5USIHXXTXQS4clbwpA21EqR_kaCHUrG4WNX-WwJXGx-WEnZnjVDT9bArgHtOLJggT7lu0cBf_znb-U/s1600/BV512back.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="77" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgr5KJRv0I2ZVGau_45SUtAcfgeuUoHA9wSN8AiADYFwphSWxJ-LiW08R7egwXav5USIHXXTXQS4clbwpA21EqR_kaCHUrG4WNX-WwJXGx-WEnZnjVDT9bArgHtOLJggT7lu0cBf_znb-U/s1600/BV512back.PNG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<span style="text-align: justify;">So, as you can see, prior to <b>Kong</b>, this was the perfect way to get at least 16 MIDI Note-to-CV Gate/Velocity output. <b>ReDrum</b> could be used but it only had 10 outs and only allowed Trigger CV out instead of Gate CV out (which is the only way to respect the Note duration).</span></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>BV512</b> did its CV tricks tirelessly, no matter if there was an audio cable connected to the modulator audio input or not. It even worked perfectly while the "Enabled" switch was Bypass or Off.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Well... guess what? </b>Apparently, allowing Vocoder Band control through MIDI input when there's no cable connected to the modulator audio input was... <b>"a bug"</b> (kinda).</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This "bug" was fixed in Reason 7 ...so, yeah, you guessed it: Any Song or Combinator patch relying on the good'ol <b>BV512</b> original behavior changed from a state of "coolness" to "borkedness".</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Yeah... there are some patches that worked fine up until <b>Reason 6.5.3</b> that now stopped working in <b>Reason 7.1.1</b>, <b>Reason 8.0</b> and <b>Reason 8.1</b> (and so on...)</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Is there a solution?</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Sure!</span></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Either replace the <b>BV512</b> acting as the "MIDI Input" device with a <b>Kong</b>, having then to deal with all the CV rewiring needed and <b>Combinator</b> modulation matrix (re)configuration or...<b> simply connect a dummy cable to the modulator input</b></div>
</div>
<div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Not sure if anyone noticed, but my red'ish/orange themed blog changed to blue... which, coincidentally matched the color change on PH's Shop :]</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This was the 1st of a few more changes to this blog.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I'm going to slowly "clean" it up of all the extra link sections, now temporarily pushed to the bottom.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Already added a "Spare Music Products on eBay" section because I finally went through my license collection and found a few unused spares that should really go to someone that will use them. I have more licenses waiting to be added to that list, but there are some limits to how many/much one can have on sale, so... there's actually a queue behind that section.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Next, will be experimenting with AdSense (<a href="http://www.google.com/settings/ads" target="_blank">configure your own Ad experience here</a>**). Not sure how that works but that's something that I never bothered to try and I guess it's time to, so I'm waiting for the approval thingy. After that, don't be surprised to see some ads somewhere around here.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
and... that's about it :)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Sorry for this "null content" administrivia post but I wanted to give some kind of heads-up about the future use of AdSense ads before actually adding them to the blog.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Well, guess all I need to do next is to (re)start posting something interesting and hopefully useful again soon, uh? ;)<br />
<br />
Edit: **I'm slowly finding stuff about this Ad stuff.</div>

Could be an automatic process, right?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Well, but it isn't, so here's the next best solution:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Manually tempo-map a variable-tempo audio track with no embedded tempo information.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
"<b><i>Instead of playing to the click, let's click to the playing</i></b>" ;)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
...which <a href="https://twitter.com/deejaysham">Ryan Harlin</a> explains perfectly.</div>

<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ZE1oCXVgoig?rel=0" width="560"></iframe>
<br />
<br />
It also briefly explains those, sometimes intriguing, audio clip icons that show up at the bottom right corner of the clips, something I remember seeing a bunch of users asking about in the old forums.<br />
